Irons
gallery/1299598489_1291221101_shgc_header_edited-1.jpgThe biggest purchase you will make so it’s important that you get the right set of irons to suit you. In general most iron sets include a 3-iron through to a Pitching Wedge (or 3-PW), ie; 8 clubs total. Each club has a little less loft than the next and a little longer shaft length than the next, so each club goes further, in fact the yardage gap between irons is generally 10-15 yards.

Irons are generally categorised as long irons, mid-irons and short irons. Long irons are the 1, 2, 3 and 4 irons; mid-irons, the 5, 6 and 7 irons; short irons, the 8 and 9 irons and pitching wedge. However, learning your own distances ie; how far you hit each club is much more important than trying to hit each club to a "correct" yardage. Also, as you move through the set to the shorter, more lofted clubs, your shots should have a steeper trajectory; they will rise and fall at a steeper angle. More loft will help get the ball airborne and should add a little more control to the shot.

There are many different head designs and shaft options so why not have a look at our videos to help you decide what style best suits your game. Whether you are a Beginner/Novice, a Skilled/Intermediate or a Highly Skilled/Single Figure Golfer take a look at our information on the different options available. It’s a big purchase so let Second-Hand-Golf-Clubs.co.uk help you get it right.

Product Guide Videos: Irons Styles | CAST vs FORGED

Iron styles - Blade - Cavity back - Hybrid sets
  • There are 4 distinct categories irons fall into: blade, semi cavity, full perimeter weighted cavity backed and hybrid mix sets. The blade design is at the professional end of the scale while the hybrid set is at the other aimed at the beginner or higher handicap golfer, with the other styles falling in between. The most popular without doubt is the standard full perimeter weighted irons, this style represents the majority of iron sets available on the market. The perimeter weighted design helps improve consistency from off centre strikes and helps launch the ball higher with less effort for greater distance.

    Irons - CAST vs FORGED
    • The majority of irons produced by golf manufacturers are made from a CAST mold. This process allows the engineers to create very complex designs that enable them to move the weight around the perimeter and also lower and deeper into the head design to help give forgiveness and increased distance. The cast designs can then also hold extra weights and materials to help aid feel and control making irons easier than ever to use. The FORGED irons offer a different level of feel and control preferred by the lower handicap golfer. The blade and semi blade designs are most often made by a forging process as they are a smaller and more compact design. The forging process is however a lot more expensive in production terms as it uses nearly double the amount metal which is reflected in the retail price.
