Wedges
gallery/1299598489_1291221101_shgc_header_edited-1.jpgWedges are the most used golf clubs in the bag and as everyone knows it’s your short game that you need to be good at if you want to improve your scores. You will need to rely on your wedges to get you out of trouble from many different lies off the turf and in the sand and get you as close to the flag as possible. Wedges feature the shortest shafts and highest lofts of any golf clubs. In fact, wedges are often identified by their loft rather than their name but they fall into the categories of pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge.

With pitching wedges typically lofted from 45 to 48 degrees, the gap wedge is so-called because it closes the "gap" in loft between the pitching wedge and sand wedge (ie; generally lofted 50-54 degrees). The sand wedge is mainly designed to help get your ball out of a bunker and has loft around 56 degrees. And as its name suggests, a lob wedge allows you to "lob" the ball high into the air, so it will drop steeply down onto the green, with little or no roll and has a loft of 60 degrees.

Clubheads are often made of softer materials, such as copper or beryllium alloy, to increase feel and touch around the green. Some are intended to rust over time, giving a unique appearance.

Some golfers carry as many as four wedges, for every conceivable situation around the green. If you're just carrying the old reliable pitching wedge that came with your standard set, you're missing out on some simple ways to help lower your scores.

Choosing the correct wedge with the right loft is essential and understanding how ‘Bounce Angle’ can affect the clubs performance in certain situations is really useful as well, so take a look at our videos for further information and start improving your short game today.

Product Guide Videos | Bounce Angle | Different Finishes on Wedges |

Understanding Bounce Angles
  • Bounce angle can be often overlooked and selecting the wrong bounce angle in wedges can really effect the clubs performance in certain conditions. Low bounce angle wedges are good for golfers who have a shallow swing whereas high bounce angles wedges will suit golfers who have a steeper swing plane. Low bounce angle wedges are often preferred in hard ground conditions giving the the club head a chance to get under the ball. High Bounce wedges are normally used in softer conditions such as in bunker that are very deep with soft sand or lush fairway lies.

Different Wedge Finishes to help Spin & Control
    • Modern day technology has introduced many different finish options to help improve the feel and spin control which is needed for those delicate shots around the green. The most common is the chrome style which the most classic option giving a soft responsive feel at impact. The milled face wedges are getting more and more popular particularly in higher lofts as the aggressive face finish really increase the spin of the shortest of shots. The rust finish is stylish and has a non reflective face that helps reduce glare when the face is wet which can be very distracting, the rust also provides extra grip on the golf ball improving control. Lastly, the black gun metal style finishes that provide the ultra soft feel of the face on short and full shots.
